Every number has a story.
For some, it may seem like just paint on a panel or fabric on a jersey. But for the ones that represent it, it is identity. It is family. It is memory. It is meaning.
My favorite number growing up was 22. That was my dads. I ran it in collaboration with my brother for a year with our ice kart. The year after, we each got our own and I was able to pick mine. For some reason, 99 stuck out. It was a double number like my dads, and it just felt right.
Looking back, maybe it was more than coincidence. In the early 2000s, Jeff and Ward Burton were running the 22 and 99 in the NASCAR Cup Series. Later, one of my all time favorite drivers, Carl Edwards, would make the 99 iconic. So in a way, my number was a reflection of everything that shaped me, family, competition, and inspiration.
That is the power of a number. It is not random. It is chosen, earned, or passed down. It carries weight in ways most people will never understand.
Numbers can hold superstition. Some believe in lucky ones, others in cursed ones. But the truth is, the number itself does not create the outcome. It is what you attach to it. It is how you show up when it is on your back, your door, or your helmet.
Maybe it connects you to who you were. Maybe it represents who you are trying to become. Either way, it matters.
We remember the numbers of those who made an impact. Jordans 23. Earnhardts 3. Bradys 12. They are more than numbers. They are legacies.
So the next time you pick a number, do not take it lightly.
Ask yourself what it means to you, what it represents, and what you are willing to put behind it.
Because when the lights go green or the whistle blows, the number does not define you.
You define what that number will mean to everyone who sees it next.
